Capelinhos Commemoration Event

September 9 • 3:00 pm-6:00 pm

Commemoration of the 60th Anniversary of Capelinhos Volcano & the Azorean Refugee Act

Many Portuguese-American families from our region arrived here because of the events that unfolded after the explosion of the Capelinhos Volcano in Faial during 1957-1958.  This event tells the tale of that eruption, how the U.S. opened its arms to families fleeing from lost villages, and how it led to greater immigration from the Azores.

Join us for this afternoon of short films and talks followed by a reception with light refreshments.  Dignitaries from the Azores and the U.S. will be in attendance.  Limited seating – RSVP required.
